Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock, psychedelic rock, acid rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, overall loudness; the genre's lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with machismo. In 1968, three of the genre's most famous pioneers, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple were founded. Though they came to attract wide audiences, they were derided by critics. Following the blueprint laid down by Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, several American bands modified heavy metal into more accessible forms during the 1970s: the raw, sleazy sound and outrageous stage shows of Alice Cooper and Kiss. During the mid-1970s, Judas Priest helped spur the genre's evolution by discarding much of its blues influence. Beginning in the late 1970s, bands in the new wave of British heavy metal such as Iron Maiden and Def Leppard followed in a similar vein.
Before the end of the decade, heavy metal fans became known as 'metalheads' or 'headbangers'. During the 1980s, glam metal became popular with groups such as Mötley Crüe. Underground scenes produced an array of more aggressive styles: thrash metal broke into the mainstream with bands such as Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax, while other extreme subgenres of heavy metal such as death metal and black metal remain subcultural phenomena. Since the mid-1990s popular styles have further expanded the definition of the genre; these include groove metal and nu metal, the latter of which incorporates elements of grunge and hip hop. Heavy metal is traditionally characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, vigorous vocals. Heavy metal subgenres variously alter, or omit one or more of these attributes; the New York Times critic Jon Pareles writes, 'In the taxonomy of popular music, heavy metal is a major subspecies of hard-rock—the breed with less syncopation, less blues, more showmanship and more brute force.'
The typical band lineup includes a drummer, a bassist, a rhythm guitarist, a lead guitarist, a singer, who may or may not be an instrumentalist. Keyboard instruments are sometimes used to enhance the fullness of the sound. Deep Purple's Jon Lord played an overdriven Hammond organ. In 1970, John Paul Jones used a Moogsynthesizer on Led Zeppelin III; the electric guitar and the sonic power that it projects through amplification has been the key element in heavy metal. The heavy metal guitar sound comes from a combined use of heavy distortion. For classic heavy metal guitar tone, guitarists maintain gain at moderate levels, without excessive preamp or pedal distortion, to retain open spaces and air in the music. Thrash metal guitar tone has scooped mid-frequencies and compressed sound with lots of bass frequencies. Guitar solos are 'an essential element of the heavy metal code.. that underscores the significance of the guitar' to the genre. Most heavy metal songs 'feature at least one guitar solo', 'a primary means through which the heavy metal performer expresses virtuosity'.

Some exceptions are nu grindcore bands, which tend to omit guitar solos. With rhythm guitar parts, the 'heavy crunch sound in heavy metal.. palm muting' the strings with the picking hand and using distortion. Palm muting creates a tighter, more precise sound and it emphasizes the low end; the lead role of the guitar in heavy metal collides with the traditional 'frontman' or bandleader role of the vocalist, creating a musical tension as the two 'contend for dominance' in a spirit of 'affectionate rivalry'. Heavy metal 'demands the subordination of the voice' to the overall sound of the band. Reflecting metal's roots in the 1960s counterculture, an 'explicit display of emotion' is required from the vocals as a sign of authenticity. Critic Simon Frith claims; the prominent role of the bass is key to the metal sound, the interplay of bass and guitar is a central element. The bass guitar provides the low-end sound crucial to making the music 'heavy'; the bass plays a 'more important role in heavy metal than in any other genre of rock'.
Metal basslines vary in complexity, from holding down a low pedal point as a foundation to doubling complex riffs and licks along with the lead or rhythm guitars. Some bands feature the bass as a lead instrument, an approach popularized by Metallica's Cliff Burton with his heavy emphasis on bass guitar solos and use of chords while playing bass in the early 1980s. Lemmy of Motörhead played overdriven power chords in his bass lines; the essence of heavy metal drumming is creating a loud, constant beat for the band using the 'trifecta of speed and precision'. Heavy metal drumming 'requires an exceptional amount of endurance', drummers have to develop 'considerable speed and dexterity.. to play the intricate patterns' used in heavy metal. A characteristic metal drumming technique is the cymbal choke, which consists of striking a cymbal and immediately silencing it by grabbing it with the other hand, producing a burst of sound; the metal drum setup is much larger than those e
Melissa Gaboriau Auf der Maur is a Canadian musician, singer-songwriter and actress. Auf der Maur began performing in 1993 after forming the indie rock band Tinker while she was a student at Concordia University, she was recruited as the bassist for the American alternative rock band Hole in the summer of 1994 and is included on several Hole releases, including the album Celebrity Skin. Following her departure from Hole in 1999, Auf der Maur joined The Smashing Pumpkins as a touring member for its 2000 tour and began her solo career, she has collaborated with Indochine, Rufus Wainwright, Ric Ocasek and Neverending White Lights. Auf der Maur is a photographer and occasional actress, her photographs have been exhibited at Sotheby's. She has acted in How to Make the Cruelest Beyond Borders and Collaborator; as part of her 2009 multidisciplinary project Out of Our Minds—which produced an album, a single, a film and a comic book—Auf der Maur acted as a film and record producer, working alongside her husband and filmmaker Tony Stone.
Stone and Auf der Maur are the creative directors and owners of Basilica Hudson, an arts and performance center in Hudson, New York. VH1 placed Auf der Maur at number 68 on its list of 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll in 2007 and her solo albums have received favorable reviews. Auf der Maur was born in Montreal, Quebec to journalist and politicianNick Auf der Maur and journalist and literary translator Linda Gaboriau. Auf der Maur's father's family was Swiss–German and her mother's was mixed European-American. Gaboriau was born in Massachusetts in the United States; as a result, she holds dual Canadian–American citizenship. Auf der Maur's surname translates to English as 'on the wall', as 'maur' was derived from the German word for 'wall', she has stated that her grandmother, Theresia Schaelin-Auf der Maur, was 'always pounding my heritage down my throat—reminding me that I'm the last one in North America to further the name'. Auf der Maur did not meet her father. Gaboriau called Nick Auf der Maur after her daughter began questioning her about her father's identity.
Reflecting on the encounter, Auf der Maur said ' realised my mother Linda was the love of his life because she'd offered the gift of this child without any demands. He fell madly in love with her pursued her for two years'. Auf der Maur and Gaboriau married in 1978; the couple divorced in 1979. A portion of Auf der Maur's childhood was spent living in 'a circus caravan in Wales, a red post-office box truck in Morocco, a hut in Kenya' with her mother. During her time in Kenya, she returned to Montreal. In Montreal, Auf der Maur attended the Fine Arts Core Education School and Moving in New Directions High School—both of which are schools of alternative education. At FACE, she was a member of the classical choir and at MIND, she was 'part of the small English elite', where she formed friendships with Leonard Cohen's daughter Lorca and Rufus Wainwright. At school, she became interested in photography and subsequently attended Concordia University, from which she majored in photography in 1994. At Concordia at age 19, Auf der Maur began working part-time as a disc jockey at Bifteck, a well known rock club, where she met several musicians including Steve Durand.
During her time as a DJ at Bifteck, Auf der Maur met fellow Concordia University student Steve Durand, with whom she formed Tinker in November 1993. Durand assumed guitar duties and Auf der Maur began playing bass, using a Fender Precision Bass that her father had purchased for her 21st birthday; the duo recruited a second guitarist, Jordon Zadorozny, a drummer and began performing at Montreal venues. At a Smashing Pumpkins performance at Les Foufounes Électriques in 1991, Auf der Maur had become friends with vocalist and guitarist Billy Corgan. During the performance, Auf der Maur's roommate heckled the band between songs and threw a beer bottle onstage while the band were performing, leading to 'a strangling fist fight' between him and Corgan. Auf der Maur explained: 'My friend Bruce, who became the drummer in Godspeed You! Black Emperor, was he whispered, ` God, this guy has attitude. They're acting, and he threw a bottle at Billy and shouted,'Drop the fucking attitude!' Bill dived off the stage, put his hands around Bruce's neck, they started fighting.
I thought,'Great. You just ruined the show.' I said, ` I'd like to apologise on behalf of Montreal. You are my new favourite band.' Auf der Maur and Corgan became pen pals. Following months of no contact, Auf der Maur sent a letter to Corgan requesting that Tinker open for The Smashing Pumpkins during their next tour date in Montreal. Corgan accepted her request and Tinker performed the largest show of their career, to 2,500 people, opening for The Smashing Pumpkins at Métropolis on November 30, 1993. Corgan, 'patted me on the back, he said,'You're a good bass player. You're going to be in my band one day.' It felt like a dream come true – the kind of confidence boost I needed.'Tinker had a brief recording career, releasing two 7' singles, 'Realalie' and 'Green Machine', on the independent record label Bear Records in 1994. The group disbanded in summer 1994 after Auf der Maur accepted Courtney Love's invitation to become the bass
Sharon Janny den Adel is a Dutch singer and fashion designer, best known as the lead vocalist and one of the main songwriters in the Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation. She has been a performing musician since the age of 14, is a founding member of Within Temptation, along with Robert Westerholt, in 1996, she was elected to be the Dutch chairperson of the jury for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. Sharon Janny den Adel was born on 12 July 1974 in Netherlands, she traveled extensively in her youth, living in at least ten different countries, including Indonesia, where she lived between ages one and six. According to den Adel, some movements that she makes during her concerts are inspired by the balinese dancers she had seen during that time. After returning from Suriname to the Netherlands, she started being bullied by school colleagues because of her different clothing style and her darkened skin from those years. From the age of 14, she performed including a blues rock band called Kashiro.
During high school den Adel met Robert Westerholt. As their partnership grew, in 1996 they came to form a band called The Portal, though the name was changed to Within Temptation before their debut recording, she has a bachelor's degree in fashion design. Den Adel and long-term partner Robert Westerholt have three children together, they live near Hilversum. Den Adel was pregnant with Eva Luna, during The Silent Force tour. On 22 February 2009, Den Adel announced that she was pregnant with her second child, Robin Aiden Westerholt, whose birth was announced on the band's official website on 1 June 2009. Going by the name of Aiden, he was born prematurely at 6 days. On 26 November 2010, Den Adel announced that she was expecting another child which, due to complications with her previous pregnancies, meant that the band's 2011 tour dates would be rescheduled from spring until autumn; the birth of her son, Logan Arwin, was announced on 31 March 2011. Den Adel never formally studied singing and stated in a 2006 interview that she had sung a short while in a choir and was self-taught.
She used to practice alone four hours per day. Sharon has a mezzo-soprano range, though she has a lyric vocal quality for that range, her highest note is found on the song 'Jane Doe' Netherlands/Australia/Japan release and her lowest on 'Empty Eyes'. On 'Stand My Ground', one of Within Temptation signature songs, Den Adel vocal range spans from C4 to A♭5. Together with her partner, Robert Westerholt, Den Adel formed Within Temptation in 1996, she has defined their work as cinematic. Her vocals play a major role in the band's sound, despite having never received formal vocal training. Before Within Temptation became famous, she worked for a fashion company, leaving after the band found success with their hit single 'Ice Queen', she utilises her fashion expertise by designing the band's merchandise. About.com described Den Adel as a 'versatile and skilled singer, adept at singing powerfully with a full orchestra and choir as she is at singing and with just a piano.' When asked if she prefers to sing in Dutch or English, den Adel said that she favours the latter because 'Dutch just doesn't fit to our music style.
It is not the nicest language to sing in. Italian or Spanish would be better options.'The band were invited several times to compete at the Eurovision Song Contest as the Dutch representatives, but they have declined everytime since they find it not the best place for a metal band to present themselves. In 2018, den Adel was selected as a juror for that year edition. On 9 November 2017, Den Adel announced on the Dutch TV-show RTL Late Night, that on the following day 10 November 2017, the first single for her solo project My Indigo entitled 'My Indigo', will be released. According to Den Adel, the project was not intended to be released to the general public as it was for her a form to deal with personal problems, due to a writer's block for composing for Within Temptation. After two years composing for herself and with regained inspiration to write for Within Temptation, Den Adel decided to share the project publicly as a separate project named 'My Indigo'; the self titled first album was released on 20 April 2018.
Sharon den Adel has performed on-stage and in the studio with several notable artists, including Tarja Turunen, Armin van Buuren, After Forever, De Heideroosjes, Oomph!, Agua de Annique and Anneke van Giersbergen. She sang the part of Anna Held in Tobias Sammet's Avantasia projects, the part of the Indian on Ayreon's rock opera Into the Electric Castle, she sang the vocals of one Timo Tolkki song, 'Are You The One?', co-wrote and recorded the vocals for the track 'In And Out Of Love' on Armin van Buuren's 2008 Trance album Imagine, sang on the track 'No Compliance' for Delain's album Lucidity, as well as working with the band Voyage on the track 'Frozen'. At the 2009 edition of the Night of the Proms festival, Den Adel made a guest appearance during John Miles' performance of 'Stairway to Heaven'. At the end of 2012, Sharon made an appearance on a charity campaign made by a Belgian radio station to raise money for children singing the chorus of the song het Meneer Konijn lied among other Belgian celebrities The song peaked #1 at the Belgium Charts.

Tori Amos is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. She is a classically trained musician with a mezzo-soprano vocal range. Having begun composing instrumental pieces on piano, Amos won a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University at the age of five, the youngest person to have been admitted, she was expelled at the age of 11 for what Rolling Stone described as 'musical insubordination'. Amos was the lead singer of the short-lived 1980s pop group Y Kant Tori Read before achieving her breakthrough as a solo artist in the early 1990s, her songs focus on a broad range of topics, including sexuality, feminism and religion. Her charting singles include 'Crucify', 'Silent All These Years', 'God', 'Cornflake Girl', 'Caught a Lite Sneeze', 'Professional Widow', 'Spark', '1000 Oceans', 'Flavor' and 'A Sorta Fairytale', her most commercially successful single in the U. S. to date. Amos has received five MTV VMA nominations, eight Grammy Award nominations, won an Echo Klassik award for her Night of Hunters classical crossover album.
She is listed on VH1's 1999 '100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll' at #71. Amos is the third child of Edison McKinley Amos, she was born at the Old Catawba Hospital in Newton, North Carolina, during a trip from their Georgetown home in Washington, D. C. Amos has said that her maternal grandparents each had an Eastern Cherokee grandparent of their own. Of particular importance to her as a child was her maternal grandfather, Calvin Clinton Copeland, a great source of inspiration and guidance, offering a more pantheistic spiritual alternative to her father and paternal grandmother's traditional Christianity; when she was two years old, her family moved to Baltimore, where her father had transplanted his Methodist ministry from its original base in Washington, D. C, her older brother and sister took piano lessons. From the time she could reach the piano, she taught herself to play: when she was two, she could reproduce pieces of music she had only heard once, and, by the age of three, she was composing her own songs.
She has described seeing music as structures of light since early childhood, an experience consistent with chromesthesia: The song appears as light filament once I've cracked it. As long as I've been doing this, more than thirty-five years, I've never seen the same light creature in my life. Similar chord progressions follow similar light patterns, but try to imagine the best kaleidoscope ever—after the initial excitement, you start to focus on each element's stunning original detail. For instance, the sound of the words with the sound of the chord progression combined with the rhythm manifests itself in a unique expression of the architecture of color-and-light.. I started visiting this world, it was euphoric. At five, she became the youngest student admitted to the preparatory division of the Peabody Conservatory of Music, she studied classical piano at Peabody from 1968 to 1974. In 1974, when she was eleven, her scholarship was discontinued, she was asked to leave. Amos has asserted that she lost the scholarship because of her interest in rock and popular music, coupled with her dislike for reading from sheet music.

In 1972, the Amos family moved to Silver Spring, where her father became pastor of the Good ShepherdUnited Methodist church. At thirteen, Amos began playing at gay bars and piano bars, chaperoned by her father. Amos won a county teen talent contest in 1977, singing a song called 'More Than Just a Friend'; as a senior at Richard Montgomery High School, she co-wrote 'Baltimore' with her brother, Mike Amos, for a competition involving the Baltimore Orioles. The song did not win the contest but became her first single, released as a 7-inch single pressed locally for family and friends in 1980 with another Amos-penned composition as a B-side, 'Walking With You'. Before this, she had performed under her middle name, but permanently adopted Tori after a friend's boyfriend told her she looked like a Torrey pine, a tree native to the West Coast. By the time she was 17, Amos had a stock of homemade demo tapes that her father sent out to record companies and producers. Producer Narada Michael Walden responded favorably: he and Amos cut some tracks together, but none were released.
Atlantic Records responded to one of the tapes, when A&R man Jason Flom flew to Baltimore to audition her in person, the label was convinced and signed her. In 1984, Amos moved to Los Angeles to pursue her music career after several years performing on the piano bar circuit in the D. C. area. In 1986, Amos formed a musical group called Y Kant Tori Read, named for her difficulty sight reading. In addition to Amos, the group was composed of Steve Caton, drummer Matt Sorum, bass player Brad Cobb and, for a short time, keyboardist Jim Tauber; the band went through several iterations of recording. In July 1988, the band's self-titled debut album, Y Kant Tori Read, was released. Although its producer, Joe Chiccarelli, stated that Amos was happy with the album at the time, Amos has since criticized it, once remarking: 'The only good thing about that album is my ankle high boots.'Following the album's commercial failure and the group's subsequent disbanding, Amos began working with other artists as a backup vocalist.
She recorded a song called 'Distant Storm' for t
