The greatest change from the 3rd to the Fourth edition is the plethora of accompanying AV materials, but there are other subtle differences. Here are some of the highlights.

Textbook

The changes to the text are not substantial, but there are enough to trip up the unsuspecting instructor if s/he runs into the classroom expecting to conduct a lesson on memory. A quick example from Unit 13:

• Snapshot: Focuses on movie trivia, not movie titles; the prompts are about trivia and movies.
• Conversation: Still Roger & Carol, but 'James Bond film' => 'Star Trek film'; 'Halle Berry' => 'Sandra Bullock'. (They're both wonderful actresses.)
• Grammar Focus: Same changes as the conversation, plus Johnny Depp has been replaced by Matt Damon. (Conspiracy? Legacy? You be the judge.)

Student self-study DVD

The DVD accompanying the Student Book has a wealth of material for the students to work with. Here are some important things to consider:

• Do not require homework from the DVD. Believe it or not, many students not having access to a DVD-ROM drive. But please do make sure students are aware of it as a great source of extra English practice.
• Note that if the student clicks on the 'Cambridge Online Dictionary' button in the top right corner of the DVD software, they are taken to the license holder's Learner's Dictionary main page and are NOT treated to the shot of the young woman in her underwear we saw at last year's workshop. Actually no ads at all, which might just help them stay focused on the English.
• According to Cambridge, the software should now install with no problems under Mac OS 10.8 and Windows 8. If you are having issues with Vista or 7, see this file.

Student Assessment software

The Teacher's Manual is accompanied by an Assessment Audio CD (Win/Mac). The software contains pre-formatted pdf file quizzes, and will also allow you to save editable MS Word documents. Well worth checking out!

Presenter Plus software

The entire textbook, plus videos, plus extra material, all in one package. Contact us at the eflcla@gen address if you're interested in using this for listening activities, etc. in class. Note that it will require PC set-up before class, and all the attendant preparation and troubleshooting.

Online workbook

Due primarily to the large number of students in the program who do not have access to a PC, the Online Workbook is not being implemented program-wide.
