Although I have been very happy with my URC-7555, I decided to give an electro-luminescent one a try, as they are now very cheap from Dixons and
Sparky-UK
It has taken a lot of fiddling about, but I now have it working quite well on the Toppy and my other kit, apart from my cheap DVD player. The codes were the same as the URC-7555 for everything but the DVD; the code I wanted was not there. I have contacted OFA so hopefully they will send me the codes.
Despite what it says on the Sparky website, the 8040 cannot be updated via modem as it doesn't have one; the 8060 does though.
I'll sort out the codes that I used for anyone who's interested tomorrow. I didn't use any learned codes.

I had one of those and thought it was great.
It had brilliant response times, unlike my Harmony 525, but in the end I preferred the feel of real buttons, so I sent it back and have stuck with the original Toppy remote

Starting with the Toppy code 1206, the first key that needed to be changed was Exit. The volume keys are also wrong, but when I changed them and then tried to use Punch-Through, it wouldn't work; so I reset and put the Toppy Volume controls as shifted volume keys.
PVR screen (all other keys as default)
Exit = 00440
Red = 00296
Ch+ = 00698
Ch- = 00426
Magic V+ = 00313
Magic V- = 00500
Info key = List = 00436
Magic Info Key = Info = 00504
l<< = Archive = 00105
>>l = White = 00036
Back = Recall = 00246
Record = 00299 (changed from default which requires double press)
Other screen
[=] = Text = 00615
[ ] = PIP = 00357
Magic [ ] = PIP swap = 00486
Subtitle = Options = 00420
Fav = TV/Radio = 00683
-/-- = Slow = 00553

I turned off the motion sensor as it was too sensitive. Walking across the room was enough to turn it on, so the batteries would not last long. The downside of this is having to press a button to energise the remote before use; this first button press is ignored, so it doesn't matter which button is used. I also reduced the EL brightness to minimum, again to maximise battery life.

The 8040 was probably made before the Toppy became popular and so doesn't have a full built-in setup code. The advanced codes you need to enter to put functions on a particular button are the same as for the 7555 (see the thread somewhere round these parts). You can also program it via JP1 (see the JP1 site) but would need a suitable adaptor in addition to getting a cable since it has six pads in the battery compartment rather than the pins found in some other URC remotes. I used one for a while and it worked well enough on rechargeable batteries (4 x 1.2V AAA NiMH's) but agree with turning off the motion sensor. It's a good bedroom remote or for use if you have the lights down low as when using a projector.
For the more adventurous - or foolish - here are some less-well known codes:
Code:
Functions Code
discrete off 00063 Might be useful in a macro
archive 00059 Can be used to bypass TAPs such as MyStuff
Service 00004 Test bars ? black and red split half screen
Service 00006 Test bars ? black and blue split half screen
Service 00007 **DANGER** CORRUPT THE HARD DISK
Service 00008 Test bars ? black and green split half screen
Service 00010 **DANGER** FACTORY RESET
Service 00011 Test bars ? black and white split half screen

I have just moved over to using a 7555 after using an American Sony RM-VL900 for a number of years. I found JP1 hugely useful. I have five source devices, plus the TV, amplifier and a SCART switch box. I have set up the 7555 in a pseudo-activity mode rather than device mode.
By that I mean that the first device button (TV) is used for the Toppy. But the power button operates the TV (the Toppy stays on) and the AV button changes the TV aspect ratio so I can watch 4:3 stuff expanded to lose the bars down the size (and lose the DOG on ITV3).
Volume up/down and mute operate the amplifier. All other buttons control the Toppy.
I have programmed a macro on the TV device key itself which switches the amplifier and the SCART switch box to select the Toppy. So I can tell my other half 'just press this button then you can watch the Freeview box'. No more accidentally turning off the Toppy when she meant to turn off the TV.
Similarly for the four other sources, a Sky box, a DVD recorder, a Hauppauge MediaMVP and a Squeezebox.
Everything works perfectly except switching the source on the AV switcher, which doesn't always work first press. Still investigating this one.

Note the difference between JP1 (URc 8040, 7562, 8910 etc.) and JP1.2 (URC 7555, 8820 etc.) remotes. They use different processors and memory and so need different cables but the software (free from the JP1 site) works with all of them.
